Radiological Imaging of Rare Intracranial Complications Secondary to Otitis Media and Mastoiditis

Abstract: Acute otitis media used to cause fatal results because of its intracranial complications before the introduction of potent and effective antibiotics. After the introduction of antibiotics, complications have started to be observed more frequently as a result of chronic otitis media and especially in children. Because clinical findings changed and became indistinct, the diagnosis of otitis and mastoiditis has been made occasionally with imaging findings only after complications occurred. Multidetector computed … Show more

“…Perforasi membran timpani umumnya menyebabkan tuli konduktif ringan, tetapi kerusakan rangkaian tulang-tulang pendengaran menyebabkan tuli konduktif yang lebih berat. 3,8 Pada pemeriksaan foto polos mastoid proyeksi Schuller, sekitar 64,72% penderita ditemukan gambaran mastoiditis kronis dengan kolesteatoma.…”

“…While meningitis is the leading cause of complications in otogenic mastoiditis, with a mortality rate of 14%, brain abscess is the second most prevalent (3,4). Before widespread use of antibiotics, up to 6% of patients experienced intracranial complications (i.e., brain abscess, venous sinus thrombosis, or meningitis) (2,5).…”
