Recently, some studies have placed additional research focus on microRNAs (miRNAs) in a bid to discover novel therapeutic approaches for cervical cancer (CC), which is one of the most common female reproductive tract malignancies with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Hence, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the ability of miR-129-5p to influence cell angiogenesis, invasion and migration by targeting ZIC2 through the Hedgehog signaling pathway in CC. Both CC and adjacent normal tissues were extracted from 87 eligible participating patients with CC. Measurements of the levels of miR-129-5p, mRNA and protein levels of ZIC2, sonic Hedgehog (Shh), Gli1, and Gli2 and levels of CXCL1, VEGF and Ang2 were determined accordingly. An angiogenesis assay was performed to evaluate cell angiogenesis in vitro, while a scratch test and transwell assay were adopted for cell invasion and migration determination. Lastly, tumor formation within nude mice was performed in order to analyze angiogenesis and tumor growth among the nude mice in vivo. The findings revealed that upregulation of miR-129-5p resulted in the decrease in the mRNA and protein levels of ZIC2, Shh, Gli1, Gli2, as well as reduced levels of CXCL1, VEGF and Ang2. Moreover, up-regulation of miR-129-5p was determined to inhibit CC cell angiogenesis ability in vitro, in addition to the processes of cell migration, and invasion. Finally, up-regulation of miR-129-5p was observed to inhibit the tumor growth and angiogenesis ability of nude mice in vivo. The results of the present study provided evidence suggesting that overexpressed miR-129-5p prevents angiogenesis and inhibits cell migration and invasion by means of negatively targeting ZIC2 through suppression of the Hedgehog signaling pathway in CC. Thus, highlighting the promise of miR-129-5p as a novel target for treating CC is promising. ARTICLE HISTORY

We report a rare case of intratumoral hemorrhage during postoperative radiotherapy for pituitary adenoma. A 57-year-old Asian male, complaining of long-standing eye strain, underwent a medical checkup of the brain. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a multicystic giant pituitary adenoma. The patient underwent an endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal partial removal of the adenoma to provide optic pathway decompression and got relief from the visual symptoms. Just before completion of the postoperative radiotherapy for residual adenoma, the patient developed right hemiparesis, mild motor aphasia, and right oculomotor palsy. A cranial CT scan showed intratumoral hemorrhage into the intratumoral cyst. The patient therefore had to undergo three additional craniotomies for evacuation of cyst contents over the next 8 months. The follow-up MRI at 11 months after the initial hemorrhage showed that the new oozing of blood in the intratumoral cyst was still appearing. Intratumoral hemorrhage is a rare, albeit life-threatening, complication of pituitary adenoma. We reviewed relevant literature and suggested that the cystic component in pituitary adenoma could be a key pathogenesis of this rare complication. In conclusion, we suggest that it may be necessary to realize that cases which have cystic giant pituitary adenoma may cause hemorrhage by chance with the foreseeability.

Acute visual symptom emergencies occur commonly and present a challenge to both clinical and radiologic facets. Although most patients with visual complaints routinely require clinical evaluation with direct ophthalmologic evaluation, imaging is rarely necessary. However, there are highly morbid conditions where the prompt recognition and management of an acute visual syndrome (AVS) requires an astute physician to probe further. Suspicious symptomatology including abrupt visual loss, diplopia, ophthalmoplegia, and proptosis/exophthalmos require further investigation with advanced imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography. This review will discuss a variety of AVSs including orbital apex syndrome, cavernous sinus thrombosis, cavernous carotid fistula, acute hypertensive encephalopathy (posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome), optic neuritis, pituitary apoplexy including hemorrhage into an existing adenoma, and idiopathic intracranial hypertension. A discussion of each entity will focus on the clinical presentation, management and prognosis when necessary and finally, neuroimaging with emphasis on magnetic resonance imaging. The primary purpose of this review is to provide an organized approach to the differential diagnosis and typical imaging patterns for AVSs. We have provided a template for radiologists and specialists to assist in early intervention in order to decrease morbidity and provide value-based patient care through imaging.
