Radiographic outcomes among South African coal miners

Abstract: The overall prevalence of pneumoconiosis, although significantly associated with CDE, was low. The presence of pneumoconiosis is associated with meaningful health effects, including deterioration in lung function. Intervention measures that control exposure are indicated, to reduce these functional effects.

“…11 Studies that investigated the effects of occupational exposure to coal, a substance similar to charcoal has established the dose-response relationships with lung diseases such as pneumoconiosis and COPD. [3][4][5][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] We hypothesize that prolonged exposure to charcoal dust is associated with increased risk for manifestation of poor respiratory health outcomes among the charcoal workers. This study investigated whether exposure to charcoal dust was related to respiratory symptoms and lung function in a dose-dependent manner.…”

“…To limit bias and maximize validity, reliability and comparability, we used a previously field-tested instrument based on the US National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health's Occupational History Questionnaire used in the US Coal Workers' X-ray Surveillance Program. 4,15 Questionnaires were administered by trained interviewers (advanced undergraduate environmental sciences students). Questionnaires were translated into three languages spoken by the participants (Oshiwambo, Rukavango, and Afrikaans) and back-translated to ensure validity.…”

“…La asociación estadísticamente significativa (p=0,34) reportada en el estudio entre los años de trabajo minero (tiempo de exposición) y la aparición de la alteración en la espirometría, reafirma la relación lineal estadísticamente significativa que se ha reportado también en los estudios de Naidoo, et al (43), y de López, et al (44).…”
