Radiographic measurement of tibial joint angles in sheep

Abstract: The aim of this study was to establish normal reference values of anatomic and mechanical joint angles of the tibia in sheep at different age groups. Eighteen clinically healthy Santa Ines sheep were used. The animals were divided into three equal groups according to age: Group I - from six- to eight-months-old, Group II - 2-years-old, Group III - from three- to five-years-old. Anatomic medial proximal and lateral distal tibial angles, mechanical proximal and distal tibial angles, and anatomic caudal proximal … Show more

“…Previous goniometric studies that assessed inter-observer variability and experience did not reveal any significant differences in goniometric joint measurements (2,5,10,13). In the present study, in which all measurements were performed by two independent investigators with relevant experience, the differences between investigators were generally not significant.…”

“…In the ovine model (Santa Inês sheep), goniometry may be useful for orthopaedic studies in which the range-of-motion must be evaluated in conditions such as osteoarthritis, bone deformities and their correction, prosthesis development for stifle surgery, total joint replacement, and articular ligament reconstruction (2,10).…”
