Radiographic features of knee and hip osteoarthritis represent characteristics of an individual, in addition to severity of osteoarthritis

Abstract: Using digital analyses of radiographic OA, strong correlations between joints within participants were found. These correlations diminished when OA became evident. This has implications for monitoring joint damage in (very) early OA with digital analyses.

“…KIDA parameters of the both knees that are assessed within one subject cannot be considered independent 11 . Therefore, associations of biochemical marker levels with minimum JSW and OP area of the tibiofemoral knee joints in one subject were investigated by two-level linear mixed-effects models, the first level being the knees and the second level being the subjects, using a random intercept and fixed effects.…”

“…1). Minimum JSW (in millimeters, mm) and OP area at the lateral and medial femur and tibia (in mm 2 ) were determined as was reported before 11 . Subchondral sclerosis was not selected as outcome of early-stage OA but was included as a potential confounder of associations of biochemical marker levels with minimum JSW and OP area.…”

“…Standardised radiographs of the tibiofemoral joint were made by a weight-bearing posteroanterior view, semi-flexed (7-10 degrees), according to protocols outlined by Buckland-Wright. 14,15 For the hip, standardised weight-bearing anteroposterior radiographs of the pelvis were made. Radiographs were read with observers…”

“…Clearly the influence of knee positioning exceeds the variation in the measurements using KIDA, since intra-observer variation was low with these measurements 16,33 . As such, to benefit from this very robust analysis method, optimal attention of the technicians involved in image acquisition is needed.…”

“…Separate radiographic parameters were quantitatively measured by use of KIDA 16 , an interactive tool to evaluate radiographic characteristics with low inter-and intra-observer variation 16,33 . All radiographs were analyzed by one experienced observer (ML) in random order.…”
