Radiographic features of cleidocranial dysplasia on panoramic radiographs

Abstract: Purpose This study aimed to investigate the panoramic imaging features of cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) with a relatively large sample. Materials and Methods The panoramic radiographs of 40 CCD patients who visited Seoul National University Dental Hospital between 2004 and 2018 were analyzed. Imaging features were recorded based on the consensus of 2 radiologists according to the following criteria: the number of supernumerary teeth and impacted teeth; the shape of the … Show more

“…While this seems to be true for MPS [7][8][9][10], we have not found any literature on the prevalence of multiple DCs in the other syndromes associated with these cysts, such as cleidocranial dysplasia, or Gardner syndrome. A radiographic study of 40 patients with cleidocranial dysplasia did not describe this feature on panoramic X-rays [41].…”

“…Clinically, not all coronoid processes with abnormal proliferative elongation will lead to restricted mouth opening. This may be attributable to the fact that the temporalis muscle is less affected or that there is no interference between the elongated coronoid process and the ipsilateral zygomatic arch; however, restricted mouth opening should be treated with coronoidectomy or coronoidotomy (Farronato et al, 2019; Goh et al, 2020; Symkhampha et al, 2021; Wang et al, 2016). According to literature review in this work, most patients with long‐term restricted mouth opening developed CPH, most CPH patients had micrognathia, and restricted mouth opening was closely related to micrognathia and CPH.…”

“…Orthognathic surgery is a usual procedure to correct maxillary hypoplasia and prognathism 50,51 . Patients with CCD exhibit some mandibular anatomical changes, including the shape of the ramus, condyle, coronoid process, and sigmoid notch 52 . Special care must be taken when digitally planning and performing orthognathic surgical osteotomies.…”
