Radiofrequency echographic multispectrometry compared with dual X-ray absorptiometry for osteoporosis diagnosis on lumbar spine and femoral neck

Abstract: The REMS approach can be used for non-ionizing osteoporosis diagnosis directly on lumbar spine and femoral neck with a good level of accuracy and precision. However, a more rigorous operator training is needed to limit the erroneous acquisitions and to ensure the full clinical practicability.

“…Therefore, it is currently not recommended to monitor treatment response according to the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) 24 , given the lack of large-scale studies outlining monitoring efficacy 29 . Quite recently, another ultrasound approach (Echographic Spectrometry) has been proposed 30 .…”

“…The technique is promising because REMS-measured BMD values have shown good agreement with the corresponding DXA-measured values. 97 With regard to sarcopenia, to date most studies have focused on US evaluation of muscle size, echo intensity, and architecture. 98 However, no conclusive recommendation is currently available about its use in clinical practice, and US is then poorly utilized.…”

“…In 2018, results of the first multi-centre study, evaluating the diagnostic usefulness of REMS in comparison with DXA, were published [23]. It included 1914 post-menopausal women aged 50-71, referred for a DXA scan of the femoral neck and/or the lumbar spine.…”

“…According to the available literature, these values in DXA method are higher and equal to 1.47% and 1.07-1.34%, respectively. This suggests lower repeatability of DXA measurements and requires further verification in well-designed comparative studies [23].…”
