Bone densitometry by radiofrequency echographic multi-spectrometry (REMS) in the diagnosis of osteoporosis

Abstract: The paper summarises the present knowledge of the new bone densitometry method called radiofrequency echographic multi-spectrometry (REMS). This ultrasound-based approach enables the evaluation of bone mineral density (BMD) in the hip and the lumbar spine. During REMS densitometry, a fully automatic algorithm performs a series of spectral and statistical analyses involving both echographic images and corresponding "raw" (unfiltered) radiofrequency signals. This provides the identification of the region of inte… Show more

“…The early diagnosis of acromegaly and investigations for new markers as well as for new diagnostic methods for assessing the risk of osteoporotic fractures are very important to improve care of acromegaly patients. REMS technology is one of the promising new methods proposed in the screening of osteoporosis [21,28]. In our study we analysed results of densitometry performed with novel REMS method and traditional DXA in acromegaly patients.…”

“…The clinical risk factors in the FRAX model are on one hand easily accessible and on the other hand highly validated from an evidence-based assessment [22]. Furthermore, FRAX tool has been incorporated into the software of some DXA scanners [23,24]. In the current study, the opportunity to assess the 10-year fracture risk with REMS technology, which has integrated Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) [25], motivated us to describe the patients' characteristics in the different FRAX risk groups with this novel method.…”

“…The measured data are synthesized into a patient-specific spectrum that is compared to reference spectral models matched by gender, age, site, and BMI in a database. The spectral modifications introduced by the physical properties of bone structure that back-diffuse the ultrasound signals are identified via a comparison procedure to determine an estimate of the BMD and the consequent diagnostic classification of healthy, osteopenic, or osteoporotic [9,10].…”
