“…The frequency of IP assignments varies greatly (up to 51% [2], generally 10-30% [29,75,76,78,79,84]) according to patient pre-selection (e.g., reason for investigation, experience of the physician); the use of the modifi ed PIOPED criteria reduced the frequency of such assignments [16,17,21,65,66,77].…”

“…No hemodynamic effects were induced by 35-μm particles up to 40 mg/kg body weight, whereas particles sized 80 μm and above showed such effects (raised pulmonary blood pressure, lower pressure in the femoral artery) at 40 mg/kg and even lower dosages for larger particles [2]. Thus, a lower toxic limit of 20 mg/kg may be assumed [2,139].…”

“…Large particles are required to prevent rapid uptake. Macroaggregated albumin is well suited for this purpose because it can be formed into any desired size from 10 nm to 100 pm or larger by variations in heat treatment and pH adjustment [10]. TechneScan MAA (Mallinckrodt) contains aggregated albumin in which at least 90% of the particles are 10-90 um in size, with the typical distribution consisting of approximately 90% within the 10-40 pm range.…”

“…This particle size is larger than the diaphragmatic mesothelial pore diameter and may be resistant to uptake. Adjustment of pH to 5.5 is important in the formation of the macroaggregates, and maintenance of this pH helps to delay particle breakdown [10]. Standard peritoneal dialysis solution (Travenol 1.5%) has a pH of 5.5 and can be used to fill the perito neal space without danger of excess fluid load for the patient, while still providing an optimal pH.…”
