Alpinia monopleura is an endemic plant which widespread and abundant in Sulawesi. Nevertheless, previous studies have not studied the chemical compound and biological activity. This study describes the chemical compounds and antibacterial and antioxidant properties of the essential oils isolated from A. monopleura. The essential oil was obtained by the hydro distillation method and interpreted by GCMS. Antibacterial properties were determined by the agar diffusion method, while DPPH and ABTS determined antioxidant activity. The most important components are α-caryophyllene, β-pinene, limonene, α-pinene, β-caryophyllene and caryophyllene oxide. Essential oils of leaves and fruit showed excellent antibacterial properties with a MIC strength of 31.3 μg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25023 and Escherichia coli ATCC 35218. The highest antioxidant effect was also shown by inhibiting ABTS and DPPH radicals, with IC50 strength of essential oil obtained from the leaf being 15.60 and 19.42 μg/mL, respectively, while from the fruit were 10.44 and 11.93 μg/mL. These antibacterial and antioxidant properties indicate that essential oils have advantages in their use in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Etlingera rubroloba A.D. Poulsen (E. rubroloba) merupakan tumbuhan endemik di Sulawesi Tenggara, dan secara empris oleh masyarakat etnis Wawonii digunakan untuk menyembuhkan demam tifoid dan meningkatkan daya tahan tubuh (imunostimulator), secara ilmiah terbukti meningkatkan aktivitas fagositosis sel makrofag sehingga berpotensi dikembangkan sebagai imunomodulator alami. Tujuan penelitian yaitu mengetahui efek imunostilator ekstrak etanol buah E. rubroloba dengan, mengukur peningkatan kadar Interferon gama (IFN-?) pada tikus wistar. Metode penelitian ini yaitu eksperimental menggunakan 24 tikus wistar jantan, dibagi dalam 6 kelompok perlakuan yaitu ekstrak dosis 200, 300, 400 (mg/kgBB), kontrol positif (ekstrak meniran komersil), kontrol pelarut (Na.CMC 0,5%), dan kontrol normal. Perlakuan diberikan secara peroral setiap hari, selama 7 hari, hari kedelapan hewan uji diinfeksikan secara intraperitonial bakteri Staphylococcus aureus. Kadar IFN-? dianalisis dengan metode Elisa sandwich, dan data diuji statistik dengan ANOVA satu arah. Penelitian ini memberikan hasil bahwa, perlakuan ketiga dosis ekstrak etanol dari buah E. rubroloba berefek sebagai imunostimulator, dengan meningkatkan kadar IFN-?, dan secara statistik berbeda bermakna terhadap kontrol pelarut (p<0,05), sehingga tumbuhan ini menjadi salah satu alternatif agen imunomodulator dari alam yang dapat dikembangkan. Kata Kunci : Buah Etlingera rubroloba, ekstrak etanol, Interferon gama, Imunodulator, tikus wistar.

This study aimed to determine the potential of methanolic extracts of Etlingera elatior stems in reducing levels of free fatty acids, blood glucose, and triglycerides in obese Wistar rats and to identify the active compounds. The study was conducted using18 rats which were divided into 3 treatment groups with post-test only control groups design, namely the standard group (P0, control), the high-fat diet group (P1), and the high-fat diet + 100mg/kg BW of Etlingera elatior stem methanol extract group (P2). After 4 weeks or the last day of treatment, the rats were fasted for approximately 10-14 hours to collect their blood. Identification of the active compound components was carried out usingthe Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry/Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) instrument. The results showed that the methanolic extract of Etlingera elatior stems was able to reduce levels of free fatty acids, blood glucose, and triglycerides in obese Wistar rats. Glucose levels in the Etlingera elatior stem methanol extract group decreased by 42.08% against the high-fat diet group. The free fatty acid content of the Etlingera elatior stem methanol extract group decreased by 13.64% compared to the high-fat diet group. The triglyceride levels in the Etlingera elatior stem methanol extract group decreased by 56.84% compared to the high-fat diet group. The results of the LC-MS/MS analysis of the Etlingera elatior stem methanol extract identified five compounds with compounds thought to have the potential to reduce free fatty acids and blood glucose, namely umbelliferone and sophoricoside.
