Radical polymerization of N‐vinylcaprolactam in homogeneous solution. II

Abstract: spnopmsThe polymerization of N-vinylcaprolactam in toluene, dioxane, chlorobeneene, dimethylformamide, and ethylene carbonate with various peroxides, perbenzoates and azobisisobutyronitrile as initiators at 60-8OoC, was studied. Under these conditions azobisisobutyronitrile and terkbutyl perbenzoate have satisfactory activity as initiators. Under these conditions N-vinylcaprolactam polymerization in homogeneous solution is f h t order towards the monomer and 0.5 order towards the initiators.

“…Preparation of poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(Nvinylcaprolactam) (PEG-b-PNVCL) block copolymers N-Vinylcaprolactam (NVCL) is an unconjugated monomer that can be polymerized only radically. 47 Until now, only a few studies have been reported on the living radical polymerization of NVCL using cobalt complexes 48,49 and xanthates. 38,50 In the rst strategy named "cobalt-mediated radical polymerization (CMRP)", [51][52][53] NVCL polymerization was controlled by using Co(acac) 2 , a commercially cheap reagent.…”

“…NVCL belongs to the family of un‐conjugated monomers and can be polymerized until high molar mass by a conventional radical polymerization process by using AIBN for instance as the free radical initiator in the bulk at 65 °C . However, this process leads to highly polydispersed polymer and attractive structures such as block copolymers are not accessible.…”

“…In this work, Solomon et al16 studied the kinetic of the bulk polymerization of N ‐vinylcaprolactam (NVCL). In 1969, Solomon et al17 studied the kinetic of the polymerization of NVCL in toluene. However, nowadays, the interest in the thermo‐responsive behavior of PNVCL is increasing.…”
