Abstract. In this study we report on airborne imaging DOAS measurements of NO 2 from two flights performed in Bucharest during the AROMAT campaign (Airborne ROmanian Measurements of Aerosols and Trace gases) in September 2014. These measurements were performed with the Airborne imaging Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) instrument for Measurements of Atmospheric Pollution (AirMAP) and provide nearly gapless maps of column densities of NO 2 below the aircraft with a high spatial resolution of better than 100 m. The air mass factors, which are needed to convert the measured differential slant column densities (dSCDs) to vertical column densities (VCDs), have a strong dependence on the surface reflectance, which has to be accounted for in the retrieval. This is especially important for measurements above urban areas, where the surface properties vary strongly. As the instrument is not radiometrically calibrated, we have developed a method to derive the surface reflectance from intensities measured by AirMAP. This method is based on radiative transfer calculation with SCIATRAN and a reference area for which the surface reflectance is known. While surface properties are clearly apparent in the NO 2 dSCD results, this effect is successfully corrected for in the VCD results. Furthermore, we investigate the influence of aerosols on the retrieval for a variety of aerosol profiles that were measured in the context of the AROMAT campaigns. The results of two research flights are presented, which reveal distinct horizontal distribution patterns and strong spatial gradients of NO 2 across the city. Pollution levels range from background values in the outskirts located upwind of the city to about 4 × 10 16 molec cm −2 in the polluted city center. Validation against two co-located mobile car-DOAS measurements yields good agreement between the datasets, with correlation coefficients of R = 0.94 and R = 0.85, respectively. Estimations on the NO x emission rate of Bucharest for the two flights yield emission rates of 15.1 ± 9.4 and 13.6 ± 8.4 mol s −1 , respectively.

Abstract. Consistent and accurate long-term data sets of global atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) are required for carbon cycle and climate-related research. However, global data sets based on satellite observations may suffer from inconsistencies originating from the use of products derived from different satellites as needed to cover a long enough time period. One reason for inconsistencies can be the use of different retrieval algorithms. We address this potential issue by applying the same algorithm, the Bremen Optimal Estimation DOAS (BESD) algorithm, to different satellite instruments, SCIAMACHY on-board ENVISAT (March 2002-April 2012 and TANSO-FTS onboard GOSAT (launched in January 2009), to retrieve XCO 2 , the column-averaged dry-air mole fraction of CO 2 . BESD has been initially developed for SCIAMACHY XCO 2 retrievals. Here, we present the first detailed assessment of the new GOSAT BESD XCO 2 product. GOSAT BESD XCO 2 is a product generated and delivered to the MACC project for assimilation into ECMWF's Integrated Forecasting System. We describe the modifications of the BESD algorithm needed in order to retrieve XCO 2 from GOSAT and present detailed comparisons with ground-based observations of XCO 2 from the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TC-CON). We discuss detailed comparison results between all three XCO 2 data sets (SCIAMACHY, GOSAT and TC-CON). The comparison results demonstrate the good consistency between SCIAMACHY and GOSAT XCO 2 . For example, we found a mean difference for daily averages of −0.60±1.56 ppm (mean difference ± standard deviation) for GOSAT-SCIAMACHY (linear correlation coefficient r = 0.82), −0.34±1.37 ppm (r = 0.86) for GOSAT-TCCON and 0.10±1.79 ppm (r = 0.75) for SCIAMACHY-TCCON. The remaining differences between GOSAT and SCIAMACHY are likely due to non-perfect collocation (± 2 h, 10• around TCCON sites), i.e. the observed air masses are not exactly identical but likely also due to a still non-perfect BESD retrieval algorithm, which will be continuously improved in the future. Our overarching goal is to generate a satellitederived XCO 2 data set appropriate for climate and carbon cycle research covering the longest possible time period. We therefore also plan to extend the existing SCIAMACHY and Published by Copernicus Publications on behalf of the European Geosciences Union. J. Absorption and fluorescence of CDOM are widely used to characterize its concentration and composition, both in situ and with remote sensing techniques. As fluorescence is an inelastic scattering process, it can potentially be observed in filling-in of Fraunhofer lines with the DOAS method in high spectrally resolved satellite data. Here, we perform a theoretical model study and preliminary DOAS retrieval on SCIAMACHY data in order to test the feasibility of such an approach. Our results show that retrieving CDOM fluorescence is difficult, due to its relatively weak signal in global oceans (in comparison to Raman scattering of clear water) and varying broad spectral features. Detailed studies of the synergistic use of narrow and broad fluorescence features, and an appropriate scheme to account for disturbance effects of Raman scattering, are needed for further investigating the retrieval of CDOM fluorescence.
