Radiation-Induced Micronucleus Frequency in Peripheral Blood Lymphocytes is Correlated with Normal Tissue Damage in Patients with Cervical Carcinoma Undergoing Radiotherapy

Abstract: In an effort to find a test to predict the response of normal tissue to radiotherapy, the lymphocyte micronucleus assay was used on blood samples from patients with cervical carcinoma. Peripheral blood samples from 55 patients with advanced-stage (II B-IV B) cervical carcinoma were obtained before radiotherapy. The patients were treated with external-beam radiotherapy followed by high-dose-rate brachytherapy. Acute and late normal tissue reactions were scored and correlated with the micronucleus frequency in l… Show more

“…This increment might be in part due to the activation of the haemopoietic tissues by L. inermis as previously reported in rainbow trout following in vitro treatment of macrophages with Glycyrrhiza glabra extract (Jang et al 1995). Similar findings were obtained by Barrett (2003) and Widel et al (2003), who reported that Echinacea preparations influenced the leukocyte count. Likewise, dietary garlic exhibited an increased level of WBC, lymphocytes, monocytes and neutrophils in C. carpio (Iranloye 2002).…”

“…The extract of P ginseng had been reported to ameliorate radiation-induced damage in mice. 34 These reports demonstrate the feasibility of using the extract of this plant to reduce the radiation injuries on peripheral blood.…”

“…In buccal mucosa 8.8 ‰ cell with MN were observed after the dose of 48 Gy, and only 7.6 ‰ after 68 Gy [26]. This phenomenon was observed also in lymphocytes of head and neck and cervix cancer patients during radiotherapy where the fre quencies of micronuclei increased during the first half of therapy and declined thereafter, reaching, in some patients, values below the pre treatment level [26,31]. In all mentioned cases no attention was paid to outcome of the therapy.…”
