“…Literature also revealed that social anxiety does not predict social support seeking, and that coping strategies do not predict social anxiety (Wright et al, 2010). Regarding racial differences, social anxiety was reported to be lower in White American college students and higher amongst Hispanic American and Asian American college students (Lesure-Lester & King, 2004). Being Native American was found to have increased risk for developing social anxiety (Grant et al, 2005).…”

“…These studies find that added stress and adversity related to SES can have effects on overall mental health (Dohrenwend, 2000; Dohrenwend et al, 1992, 1998; Hudson, 2005; Kessler et al, 1994; Kessler & Neighbors, 1986). In addition, the literature also strongly links the stress and adversity faced by ethnic minorities to a decrease in mental health (Dohrenwend, 2000; Dohrenwend et al, 1998; George & Lynch, 2003; Gore & Aseltine, 2003; Kessler & Neighbors, 1986; LeSure-Lester & King, 2004; Vega & Rumbaut, 1991). Given the demographics of community college students, they may face higher levels of stress and be at more risk for psychopathology than traditional university students.…”

“…Taking physical, economic, social and cultural environments into consideration, counseling staff members work to involve students in academic and extracurricular activities that integrate them into the campus community and promote personal well being and success. These program faculty members encourage students to maintain respective cultural values and simultaneously employ strategies to negotiate negative messages possibly perpetuated by the dominant society (Lesure-Lester & King, 2004). At the University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA, a structured and intensive peer-advisor program exists for incoming minority students (Olson, 2006).…”
