Background: Although several potential risk factors have been discussed, risk factors associated with bacterial colonization or even infection of catheters used for regional anaesthesia are not very well investigated.

We present a case report of severe localized infection after continuous popliteal sciatic nerve block. The report highlights the importance of meticulous asepsis and possibly limiting the duration of catheter use.

In this prospective study, continuous femoral nerve catheters were effective for postoperative analgesia but had a frequent rate of bacterial catheter colonization. We found no serious infections after short-term (2-day) infusion. Side effects were few, but one nerve injury occurred.
