Quercetin-rich onion peel extract suppresses adipogenesis by down-regulating adipogenic transcription factors and gene expression in 3T3-L1 adipocytes

Abstract: The results indicate that OPE treatment significantly prevents intracellular lipid accumulation via hyperactivation of genes regulating lipolysis as compared with quercetin alone.

“…Flavonoids are found in onions, with notable bioactivity (1,2). These plant-derived polyphenols serve beneficial roles in humans (3,4) and contain chemical substances that irritate the eyes (1). Certain phenolic compounds and flavonoids exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-cholesterol, anticancer and antioxidant properties (1)(2)(3)(4).…”

“…In 3T3-L1 cells, quercetin and quercetin-rich OPE attenuated adipogenesis [1718] and decreased liver fat accumulation in mice fed a Western diet or high-fat diet (HFD) [79]. Recently, Yang and Kim [19] demonstrated that the obesity index (% fat, BMI, waist circumstance) were significantly decreased by OPE intake for 12 weeks in obese university women.…”

“…Onion (Allium cepa L.) is a universally consumed functional food rich in flavonoids, mainly quercetin and saponins (9), which suppress oxidative stress and inflammation as well as induce lipolysis (10). More than 500,000 tons of onion peel waste is produced annually in the European Union and other parts of the world.…”
