Quercetin Ameliorates Diabetic Nephropathy by Reducing the Expressions of Transforming Growth Factor-β1 and Connective Tissue Growth Factor in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats

Abstract: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the main causes of end-stage renal disease. Many studies have indicated that transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) were involved in the pathophysiological mechanisms of DN. In addition, quercetin has been suggested to attenuate DN. In this study, we aim to examine whether quercetin ameliorates renal function through an effect on the expressions of TGF-β1 and CTGF in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced i… Show more

“…This result indicates that these compounds have therapeutic effects. Similar findings were reported by previous studies [90], [150][151], [154][155]. Creatinine content reduced more significantly after combined administration than after single administration of the four components.…”

“…This result indicates that these compounds elicit therapeutic effects. Similar findings were reported by previous studies [150], [156]. Significant differences in the therapeutic effect of the three components were noted between the single and combined administration in the model group ( p <0.01).…”

“…CTGF belongs to the CNN family of matricellular proteins, which regulates extracellular matrix synthesis. CTGF is upregulated in experimental animal models of proliferative glomerulonephritis and diabetic glomerulosclerosis, and its expression is regulated in response to TGF-β 1 [12]. Thus, the present study examined TGF-β 1 and CTGF expression by immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting.…”

“…Studies show that TGF- β 1 and CTGF have an essential impact on the DN pathophysiological systems involved. Studies examined the impact of quercetin on TGF- β 1 and CTGF renal functions in streptozotocin- (STZ-) induced diabetic Sprague-Dawley rats [43]. Results showed that rats treated with quercetin saw a reduction in their weight ratio of kidney and body.…”
