INTRODUCTION Academic librarians, especially in the field of scholarly communication, are often expected to understand and engage with research impact indicators (or the collective quantitative and qualitative measures of research impact). However, much of the current literature only speculates as to how academic librarians are using and implementing research impact indicators in their practices. METHODS This study analyzed the results from a 2015 survey administered to over 13,000 academic librarians at Carnegie-classified R1 institutions in the United States. The survey concentrated on academic librarians' familiarity with and usage of research impact indicators. RESULTS This study uncovered findings related to academic librarians' levels of familiarity with research impact indicators and their uses of these indicators in their professional development and in their library job duties. DISCUSSION In general, academic librarians with regular scholarly communication support duties at R1 institutions tend to have higher levels of familiarity with research impact indicators. Overall, academic librarians are most familiar with citation counts and usage statistics and least familiar with altmetrics. During one-on-one consultations with faculty, certain research impact indicators, such the JIF, were more likely to be addressed than others. In addition, the findings suggest that faculty who are concerned with tenure, promotion, and grants are more likely to have an interest in research impact indicators. The survey results also hint toward a growing interest in altmetrics among academic librarians for their professional advancement. CONCLUSION Academic librarians are continually challenged to keep pace with the changing landscape of research impact metrics and research assessment models. By responsibly employing research impact indicators in their own practices, academic librarians can provide a crucial service in educating the wider academic community.

Busca-se oferecer parâmetros a partir de pesquisa teórica e exploratória sob enfoque da constituição e institucionalização da Ciência da Informação para o estabelecimento de elo com a Competência em Informação. Abordagens são apresentadas cujas contribuições permitem compreender as relações e formas da ciência em geral e sua aplicabilidade ao universo pesquisado, uma vez que as teorias têm maior correspondência com o aprofundamento da área e suas relações sociais, culturais e econômicas. Espera-se contribuir com referencial seletivo que auxilie a compreensão das questões decorrentes à Ciência da Informação e o conhecimento gerado pelos seus pesquisadores. Research management in relation to Research and Development (R&D) has found a comprehensive and powerful tool in the Current Research Information System (CRIS). Publications on the subject are still emerging, so knowing what research has been done and its contributions presents an opportunity to build theoretical and reference frameworks, and to identify gaps and potential opportunities for future developments in information technology. Various articles covering these systems were analyzed with the objective of identifying the research areas, countries and institutions in which they were published, as well as their research approaches, contributions and topics covered. A systematic mapping of literature was carried out, which included 33 articles published on Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus, from 2007 to 2017. To ensure valid results, the evaluation guide for researchers was used during for the design and review phases of the systematic mapping studies, as well as the corresponding evaluation rubric; in addition, a strategy to define direct decision rules on how to classify an article based on the results of evaluations of multiple researchers was adopted. The findings show that the main research areas are Information Science & Library Science and Computer Science; the largest concentration of publications is found in Europe; research focuses on Evaluation Research; contributions are oriented to create processes and models, and to describe the applications and uses of CRIS. It is concluded that there are areas of opportunity for the development of research in this area, such as the expansion of the research areas in which it is used, the possibilities of collaboration, sharing and exchange at a global level, and the coverage towards integration issues with open access.
