Quantum origin of quantum jumps: Breaking of unitary symmetry induced by information transfer in the transition from quantum to classical

Abstract: Measurements transfer information about a system to the apparatus, and then further on -to observers and (often inadvertently) to the environment. I show that even imperfect copying essential in such situations restricts possible unperturbed outcomes to an orthogonal subset of all possible states of the system, thus breaking the unitary symmetry of its Hilbert space implied by the quantum superposition principle. Preferred outcome states emerge as a result. They provide framework for the "wavepacket collapse",… Show more

“…[96], it is argued that the collapse axiom in conventional descriptions of quantum mechanics, essentially leads to requiring the existence of a preferred orthonormal set of basis states. Our reasoning is the other way around: we start with the fundamental orthonormal basis and derive from that the emergence of the collapse of the wave function.…”

“…This is the reason why one has spoken of a Darwinism in relation to physics (Zurek 2004;2007). In fact, the general principles of biological evolution (variance, selection and transmission) can be applied to the whole of the physical world (Peirce 1887-88;Campbell 1960;Lewontin 1970;Plotkin 1993; see also Auletta 2011a, Sec.…”
