“…This paper applies Engels' 'housing question' to the working and housing conditions of immigrant platform delivery riders in Barcelona. While contemporary research has compared the labour conditions of the present-day platform or gig workers to those of the proletarian workers (Anwar, 2018;Bershidsky, 2018;Castranova, 2020), and explored the impacts of the gig economy on immigrant workers' labour-market integration (Benton and Patuzzi, 2018) and the gig workers' working conditions (Bajwa et al, 2018;Bogliacino et al, 2020;Bradley et al, 2016), Engels' perspectives on the spatial dimensions and housing conditions of these workers remain underexplored. This paper attempts to advance the existing research and analyse fieldwork on the immigrant platform riders in Barcelona; it intends to holistically examine the impact of the capitalistic model of platform-delivery work on the riders' overall socioeconomic and housing conditions in context of the city's housing policies and the ongoing pandemic.…”
