Quantitative Treatment of Ketal Hydrolysis in Aqueous Solutions Containing Polymer-Surfactant Complexes Using a Pseudophase Kinetic Model

Abstract: The acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of 2-@-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-dioxolane and benzaldehyde di-tert-butyl acetal has been studied in the presence and absence of poly(ethy1ene oxide)-sodium dodecyl sulfate (PEO-SDS) solutions. The kinetic data were interpreted in light of the pseudophase ion-exchange (PPIE) formalism by assuming that reaction can occur in three pseudophases, namely, aqueous, micellar, and PEO-SDS complex. The degree of ionization (a) for PEO-SDS complexes was determined from the ratio of the slopes of co… Show more

“…[40] In addition, the polymer-surfactant complex may consist of surfactant micelles bound to the polymer, enabling higher mobility of the sodium ions from one micelle to another. [41] Evidence of formation of polymer-surfactant complexes [42] may be observed from the characteristic behavior of the conductivity plots within the concentration range of CAC-PSP. Figures 11 and 12 show conductivity vs SDS concentration in the presence of xanthan gum and PHPA, respectively, which also show similar trends.…”

“…15 Pellets with molar ratios of 1:1, 1:2 and 2:1 AgBr/Ag 2 S were prepared by submitting them to a pressure of 3x10 6 Pa and glueing them to separate glass tubes with the above described size. The electrodes for bromide without inner solution, were prepared by glueing the pellets with conductive material (graphite/Araldite) to a sheet of copper.…”

“…This concentration is usually denoted by critical aggregation concentration, cac. 6 For ionic surfactants, such as regular ionic micelles, the bound micelles to polymer, so called surfactant-polymer complexes, are strongly influenced by agents such as electrolytes, which affect the micellar electrostatic surface interactions.…”
