Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a growing concern, as people spend about 80-90 percent of their time indoors. It is known that IAQ in office buildings influences people's health. Employment agencies are one of the most important institutions, where more than 1000 people visit and hold interviews every day. Measurements were made to assess the IAQ that staff and visitors to the building are exposed to, and the findings were compared to WHO and ARSHAE standards. Two questionnaires were applied to the staff to have an insight into their exposure and determine their effects on health. The mean PM 10 was found to be 67.73 μg/mᶾ; PM 2.5 was 35.95 μg/mᶾ and sound was 67 dBA, which may pose risks for health. The first questionnaire was to measure the exposure of indoor air pollutants to individuals, who reported that ventilation is frequently inadequate (42%) and the office environment is always noisy (57%). In the second questionnaire, the participants complained of dry and sore throat (42%), frequent tearing and redness in eyes (60%).These have been considered to result from the fact that the building is an old one, there is a lack of ventilation and air conditioning system, an open office system is used without insulation system like folding screens, and the the building is not big enough considering the number of daily visitors. The results of the study are expected to enhance the indoor air quality of similar public buildings into higher standards and to ensure the satisfaction of the employees.

Even though the measures to minimize the stack effect in high-rise buildings were taken that include a revolving door on the lobby floor, additional barriers to the passage of air in the lower part of the building, and air-tightness reinforcement for elevator doors, the stack effect is still present during cold season in Korea. However, it is difficult to fully apply the measures for stack effect under occupied condition in high-rise buildings. In this study, as an advanced method to lower the stack effect in high-rise buildings under occupied condition, mechanical ventilation in elevator shaft space, which cools the shaft space with outdoor air and reduces the temperature or pressure differences between indoor air in shaft and outdoor air, was proposed. In this paper, the application details and performance analyses of the installed shaft cooling system in a completed building in Korea were described. Also, as a measure to improve the performance of the applied system, concentrated cooling in the lower part of the elevator shaft where there is a main air flow passage was proposed. As a result, cooling effect of mechanical ventilation system in elevator shaft was improved and the extent of stack effect in winter was decreased effectively.

This study aims to analyze the factors of indoor environment on occupants' health and comfort by post-occupancy evaluation (POE) and to accumulate the fundamental data of occupants' behaviour in relation to indoor environment, in an effort to ascertain the optimal building energy management system (BEMS). For this purpose, indoor temperature, relative humidity, vertical temperature distribution, air velocity, predicted mean vote (PMV), radiant temperature, outdoor temperature, and humidity were measured for evaluating thermal environment for nearly 2 years. Indoor air contaminants, such as PM 10 , CO 2 , formaldehyde, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured in the building and at outdoor locations. Working plane illuminance, window luminance, and the equivalent continuous a-weighted sound pressure level (Leq) were also monitored. In addition, the occupants in the intelligent office building were surveyed regarding the indoor environmental quality via the intranet. Results showed that all indoor environmental factors satisfied the recommendation, except the indoor relative humidity and PMV. The physical factors of thermal environment had been stable since two months after it was built. However, it should be necessary to improve the sound privacy caused by low background noise, seasonal air-conditioning for appropriate humidity, air freshness, and Video Display Terminal (VDT) glare in order to reduce the level of occupants' annoyance.
