Quantitative Determination of Sesquiterpene Lactones in Plant Material by Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract: A method for the quantitative determination of sesquiterpenes in plant material by means of infrared spectroscopy is described. It was applied to seven species of the family Compositae and gave accurate results.

“…From the standpoint of biological activity, it should be noted that arctiopicrin and onopordopicrin are structurally close to alatolide [with CH 2 OH at C-10 and OCO-CH(CH 3 ) 2 at C-8] and eupatoriopicrin [with CH 3 -at C 4 and OCO-C(CH 2 OH)=CH(CH 2 OH) at C-8], which were reported to exhibit antitumor activity in vivo on three models [11]. The antitumor activity was also observed for the extract of tomentum burdock species [5].…”

“…Determination of parthenolide has been reported in several studies based on GC [8,9], HPLC [10,11], and droplet counter-current chromatography [12]. The isolation of parthenolide, and its medical benefits, have been the subject of several patents [13][14][15].…”

“…Parthenolide has been determined in medicinal herbs using TLC (Picman et al, 1980), IR (Bloszyk et al, 1978), 1 H-NMR (Awang et al, 1991), GC (Smith and Burford, 1992) and HPLC (Marchand et al, 1983;Awang et al, 1991;Rey et al, 1992;Castaneda-Acosta et al, 1995;Brown et al 1996). To date, no reports have been published concerning the determination of parthenolide in biological fluids.…”
