Quantitative determination of gibberellins by high performance liquid chromatography from various gibberellins producing Fusarium strains

Abstract: High performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method was developed for analysis of seven gibberellins, i.e., GA3, GA4, GA7, GA3 methyl ester, GA7 methyl ester 3,13 diacetate, GA7 methyl ester, and fusaric acid, using an isocratic system. Method was used for estimation of gibberellins from different Fusarium strains. Gibberellins were extracted from 28 strains of Fusarium, out of which six strains of Fusarium were isolated from soil of different parts of India and 22 strains were procured from the Indian Type … Show more

“…Gibberellins (GAs) were extracted from 0.5 ml of acidified filtered medium and run in parallel to a GA3 standard on thin-layer chromatography (TLC) as described previously (39). The samples were dried, dissolved in 6 l acetonitrile, loaded on silica gel 60 TLC plastic sheets (Merck, Darmstadt, Germany), and run in benzene-n-butyl alcoholacetic acid (60:30:10) as the mobile phase.…”

“…1,2) The Fusarium fungus is a well-known soil-borne saprophytic and parasitic fungus that produces diverse bioactive secondary metabolites; for example, fumonisins, trichothecenes and zearalenone are mycotoxins, 3) fusaric acid and moniliformin are phytotoxins, 4) and gibberellins are phytohormones. 5) A number of Fusarium fungi also produce naphthoquinones and related metabolites as fungal pigments; they include javanicin, fusarubin, anhydrofusarubin, 4a,10a-dihydrofusarubin, and marticin. 6) Among them, 4a,10a-dihydrofusarubins A and B were first isolated in 1978 from F. solani as true metabolites before non-enzymatic oxidation to give fusarubin, 7) and the 3-O-ethyl ether of 4a,10a-dihydrofusarubin A was later isolated from F. solani, 8,9) and the 3-O-methyl ether of 4a,10a-dihydrofusarubin A together with the 3-O-ethyl ether was isolated from F. martii.…”
