Quantitative and qualitative analysis of palatal rugae patterns in Gujarati population: A retrospective, cross-sectional study

Abstract: Introduction:Palatal rugae are irregular and nonidentical mucosal elevations seen on the anterior third of palate. They are arranged in transverse direction on either side of the median palatine raphe (MPR) and are protected from high temperature and trauma because of their rational position in the oral cavity. Their number and patterns are not uniform in all the individuals, and they appear to vary in different population subsets. The study of palatal rugae is termed as “Rugoscopy” or “Palatoscopy”, and it fi… Show more

“…However, there was still low accuracy in predicting sibling groups which may be due to individual variations and the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors in the palatal rugae morphology. Additionally, different population groups may show similar patterns rendering population identification challenging (40). In contrast, discriminatory ability between gender of 130 Iranians using rugae length, shape, and unification yielded prediction accuracy of 70% with discriminant function analysis (35).…”

“…This characteristics is caused by the rugae position in oral cavity. Palatal rugae is protected by tongue , teeth , cheecks, and alveolar process, ensure it to be not impaired by trauma, orthodontics treatment and finger sucking (Pillai et al, 2016). Palatal rugae is unique topography, no one have similar pattern.…”

“…Another specialty of palatal rugae is the durability .Palatal rugae can last up to 7 days after death and can withstand heat, for example degree 3 burn. Because of its uniqueness, stability, and resistance to damage it is this that causes rugae palatina to be a very potential anatomical landmark (Pillai et al, 2016).…”
