Quantitative analysis of relationships between crack characteristics and properties of soda-saline soils in Songnen Plain, China

Abstract: The Songnen Plain has a typical soda-saline soil, which often shrinks and cracks under natural conditions during water evaporation. This study aims to analyze the relationships between the crack characteristics and the soil properties of soda-saline soils quantitatively, and attempts to establish prediction models for the main soil properties of soda-saline soils based on the results. In order to achieve these objectives, a desiccation cracking test was conducted using 17 soil specimens with different salinity… Show more

“…At present, soil cracking and evaporation are quantitively analyzed using the correlation analysis, image process, and other chemical and biological methods [18][19][20][21]. e cracking mechanism was also investigated according to the crack behavior, crack initiation, and development [22].…”

“…After a series of studies on 32 saline-alkali soils, Smith et al [32] determined the relationship between the cation exchange capacity of the soils and their linear expansion coefficient (COLE), with a correlation coefficient up to 0.81. Ren et al [33,34] extracted the textural features of crack patterns, and quantitatively analyzed the relationship between texture feature and salinity of saline-sodic soils. Zhang et al [35] conducted desiccation tests of saline-sodic soils in the laboratory to analyze the effects of NaCl content on their cracking behavior during water evaporation.…”
