Quantifying the impact of Russia–Ukraine crisis on food security and trade pattern: evidence from a structural general equilibrium trade model

Abstract: PurposeConsidering the importance of Russia and Ukraine in agriculture, the authors quantify the potential impact of the Russia–Ukraine conflict on food output, trade, prices and food security for the world.Design/methodology/approachThe authors mainly use the quantitative and structural multi-country and multi-sector general equilibrium trade model to analyze the potential impacts of the conflict on the global food trade pattern and security.FindingsFirst, the authors found that the conflict would lead to soa… Show more

“…During 2019-2021, Ukraine accounted for 10% of global wheat exports, about 50% of sunflower oil exports, and 15% of barley and corn exports. These indicators confirm the existence of a threat to global food security, which is also noted by the authors of the article [4], who tried to analyze the potential impact of military aggression against Ukraine on food production.…”

“…The role of international aid and assistance to these affected countries, as well as to Ukraine itself, is paramount in ensuring their food security. Some of the impacts already felt in the food system include rising agricultural prices, declining trade volumes and severe food insecurity (Feng et al, 2023). The vegetable oil price index more than doubled, the cereal price index increased by more than 60% and the sugar price index by more than 50% (FAO, 2023).…”

“…Just and Echaust (2022) and Fang and Shao (2022) explore risk spillovers and volatility risks in global agricultural markets during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, and their findings demonstrate a substantial increase in uncertainty and volatility in global food markets. Feng et al (2023) employ a structural general equilibrium trade framework to quantify the possible negative effects of the conflict on food production, food prices, food trade, and food security. Zhou et al (2023) develop an underload cascading failure model and a new simulation approach to identify the magnitude and process of the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on global food security.…”
