Quantification of the morphological features of a full microvascular network

Abstract: Investigations into the changes that occur in microvasculature following the surgical procedure called delay have brought about the need for a computer system capable of quantifying the morphological features of a full microvascular network in terms of average vessel length, diameter, and tortuosity. Both the formulaic conventions that have been developed to measure these quantities as well as their implementation in the form of a HP-9000/UNIX based computer software system that we developed specifically for t… Show more

“…Current work aims at generalizing this treatment, in order to characterize a network of branched vessels, such as occur in the micro vascular network of the retina. An earlier attempt to this [21], (analogous to our approach) also used the average tortuosity of vessel segments to characterize such a network. Investigations are underway to assess the goodness of the proposed measure in other retinopathies having similar vascular morphology changes, such as diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retinopathy and cardiovascular diseases.…”

“…Based on this, subsequent to this study we designed a PC-based system which performs the same functions in shorter time and which in addition to TVL can also be used for measuring in vivo microcirculation preparations. 24 The clinical importance of this research stems from the fact that once a better understanding of the regulatory mechanisms involved in tissue ischemia is achieved we will be able to manipulate this process. Manipulations such as stimulating endogenous angiogenic stimulators or administration of exogenous factors are the most obvious possibilities.…”
