Quantification of rectifications for the Northwestern University Flexible Sub-Ischial Vacuum Socket

Abstract: Rectification maps and template were used to facilitate teaching and central fabrication of the Northwestern University Flexible Sub-Ischial Vacuum Socket. Minor issues with quality of initial fit achieved with the template may be due to inability to adjust the template to patient characteristics (e.g. tissue type, limb shape) and/or the degree to which it represented a fully mature version of the technique. Clinical relevance Rectification maps help communicate an important step in the fabrication of the Nort… Show more

“…A rectification map was created as a socket fabrication template in CAD/CAM. 168 Also, the design experience of several prosthetists was employed to develop an algorithm to build a quantitative compensation model for socket design based on tissue characteristics of the residual limbs. 169 A research group proposed automatic rectification based on empirical rules.…”

“…A further five were partly related to this topic by, for example, describing a model or scale to facilitate professional communication; however, these studies did not include any relevant outcome data. [7][8][9][10][11] Of the five remaining studies, two did not include outcomes: one compared P&O programmes (including courses on communication skills) 12 and the other discussed the development of a visualization aid, but not if using this aid improved communication or clinical outcomes. 13 The only three studies in which data on this topic were presented included an observational study and two semi-quantitative studies.…”

“…For both sockets, positive model rectification requires only plaster removal. 1,5 While the same clinical algorithm 1 is used for both sockets, the rectification maps in Figure 2 (produced using the procedure described in Fatone et al 5 ) compare rectifications for the NU-FlexSIS and NU-FlexSIV sockets for the same residual limb. While rectifications are similar, the boomerang outline highlights that the posterior rectification terminates proximal to the seal and that the proximal-lateral rectification is slightly deeper for the NU-FlexSIS socket.…”
