Quantification of pentane in exhaled breath, a potential biomarker of bowel disease, using selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry

Abstract: SIFT-MS can be used to quantify pentane in human breath in real time avoiding sample storage. This method of analysis can ultimately form the basis of non-invasive screening of inflammatory processes, including inflammatory bowel disease.

“…In eNose devices, the physical quantity of each individual sensor, such as electrical resistance or oscillation frequency, can be influenced by the entire spectrum of VOCs present in a gaseous mixture [3]. Confounding VOCs, originating from non-relevant or non-avoidable environmental, host-specific or sampling-specific sources, may predominantly interact with these nanosensors, instead of those VOCs of potential interest [29,30]. Contrariwise, whereas a single VOC alteration based on a given confounder may cause significant changes in GC-MS results, this could have negligible effect on the array of cross-reactive sensors in an eNose [15].…”

“…However, the use of m/z values for biomarker detection is unreliable, especially at higher m/z , as ions could represent any or many of a number of compounds. Recently, Dryahina and co-workers [145] reported pentane as potential biomarker of bowel disease, by analysing the breath of patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and of healthy volunteers, in a pilot study using SIFT-MS.…”

“…Differences in 7 VOCs were found in the headspace of vapor from urine samples in patients with gastro-esophageal cancer [160,161]. Pentane has been examined as a potential biomarker of bowel disease [162]. A careful analysis of changes in breath metabolites associated with advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been undertaken and outlined in a review paper [163].…”
