Quantification of Feto-Maternal Heart Rate from Abdominal ECG Signal Using Empirical Mode Decomposition for Heart Rate Variability Analysis

Abstract: Abstract:In this paper, a robust method of feto-maternal heart rate extraction from the non-invasive composite abdominal Electrocardiogram (aECG) signal is presented. The proposed method is based on the Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) method, in which a composite aECG signal is decomposed into its constituent frequency components called Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) or simply "modes", with better spectral separation. Decomposed IMFs are then selected manually acco… Show more

“…These variations arise mainly due to the sympathetic and the parasympathetic activity of the human body which is governed by the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The effect of HRV on mother and her fetus has been studied by Queyam et al in case of normal pregnancies and they concluded that fetomaternal HRV analysis is beneficial for understanding the autonomic regulation of mother and her fetus [31]. Factors like baroreflex sensitivity, thermoregulation, umbilical blood flow rate [32], circadian rhythm, meals, physical activity, etc.…”

“…The whole process is an adaptive process, fully data-driven, without the need to define functions in advance. The main steps of EMD are as follows [159][160][161][162][163][164][165]:…”

“…The EMD decomposition process is shown in Figure 14: [159][160][161] An example of EMD decomposition is shown in Figure 15: The existing body of research on EMD suggests that it is a powerful decomposition tool in time series analysis. Therefore, EMD is usually combined with other methods for data processing.…”

“…In recent years, several improved EMD methods have been proposed to suppress mode mixing, which are ensemble EMD (EEMD) [11][12][13][14] and complete EEMD with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN) [15][16][17]. However, EMD and improved EMD methods are all empirical decomposition algorithms, which lack the strict mathematical theory for support [18,19].…”
