Quantification of chloride ion impurities in ionic liquids using ICP-MS analysis

Abstract: The residual chloride ion content in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, [bmim]BF 4 , prepared via various methods, was analysed by ICP-MS. A preliminary analysis was also performed on 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [bmim]PF 6 .

“…Conductivity measurements were carried out using a Metrohm 660 conductivity meter equipped with two Pt black electrodes, with a cell constant of 0.852 cm -1 . Chloride analysis of the RTILs was determined according to the method used by McCamley et al [20] with a PerkinElmer Sciex Elan 6100 ICP-MS. Finally, water in the RTILs was determined using a Karl Fisher model 701 KF Titrino system with Hydranal Composite 5 as titrant and HPLC grade methanol as the base.…”

“…Ainsi McCamley et al (2004) ont utilisé un ICP-MS haute résolution (ICP-HRMS) pour mesurer les impuretés de chlore résiduel après synthèse dans 6 liquides ioniques issus de voies de synthèse différentes. Avec une limite de quantification de 10 µg/l, le gain en sensibilité de l'ICP-HRMS au regard des techniques de type électrophorèse capillaire est de 100 fois.…”

“…11,12 Moreover, results can be questionable in case of hydrophobic ionic liquids, as these methods typically rely on aqueous media. 13 Optimized detection methods such as chloride sensors, 6 ion chromatography [14][15][16] X-ray uorescence, 17 capillary electrophoresis, 18 cathodic stripping voltammetry, 19 and even inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) 20 have been reported to be employed for residual chloride determination. These methods offer higher sensitivity and accuracy compared to classical wet chemical methods; however, they lack in ease of use and oen require sophisticated sample preparation.…”
