Quantification and Purification of Mangiferin from Chinese Mango (Mangifera indica L.) Cultivars and Its Protective Effect on Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells under H2O2-induced Stress

Abstract: Mangiferin is a natural xanthonoid with various biological activities. Quantification of mangiferin in fruit peel, pulp, and seed kernel was carried out in 11 Chinese mango (Mangifera indica L.) cultivars. The highest mangiferin content was found in the peel of Lvpimang (LPM) fruit (7.49 mg/g DW). Efficient purification of mangiferin from mango fruit peel was then established for the first time by combination of macroporous HPD100 resin chromatography with optimized high-speed counter-current chromatography (H… Show more

“…Peels are good source of mangiferin (C-glucosyl xanthone), a heat-stable and pharmacologically active phytochemical. Mangiferin possess various bioactivities, such as antiinflammation, anti-diabetic, immunomodulatory, antitumor and antioxidant (Luo et al 2012). It showed high DPPH· free-radical scavenging capacity and thus has potential in the prevention of oxidative stress-associated diseases.…”

“…According to the results presented in Table 2, mangos cultivated in Córdoba present similar values and even higher for Mangiferin content reported in different research. For example, Luo et al (2012) reported that the Mangiferin content in 11 varieties of mango pulp from China, was between 0.2 and 20 mg/100 g dry matter.…”

“…One of such ingredients that have undergone close scrutiny in recent years is mangiferin (MG), a C-glucosylxanthone (Scheme 1). MG belongs to the class of yellow oxygenated heterocyclics called xanthones, whose role is well-known in medicinal chemistry [3] [4]. The extraction of this promising pharmacological ingredient from various parts of the tropical based Mangifera indica L. by different authors has been reviewed by [5].…”
