This study aimed to investigate the impact of perceived parental differential treatment (differential paternal control and affection, differential maternal control and affection) on sibling relationships (warmth, conflict, and rivalry) among adolescents. The theory of equity and social comparisons were included in the theoretical framework. The role of demographics was also assessed for the study variables. A correlational design with a purposive-convenient sampling technique was used to collect data from adolescents. A sample of 232 adolescents aged 18 to 24 years (M= 20.84, SD= 1.70) was taken from the main cities of Punjab, Pakistan. SIDE (Daniels & Plomin, 1985) and the ASRQ-S (Stocker et al., 2001) were the measures used in the study. Results revealed a positively related relationship between perceived maternal and paternal affection and sibling warmth and a negative relationship between perceived maternal and paternal control and sibling rivalry and conflict.

BackgroundChildren with meningomyelocele may require continuous care. Consequently, there is a risk for caregiver burden and impact on family quality of life (QoL), including siblings' QoL. Some studies analysed caregivers' burden and family QoL separately. However, none of these studies evaluated siblings' QoL and the associations between these three dimensions. This study investigated the associations between caregivers' burden, family QoL and siblings' QoL in Brazilian families of children with meningomyelocele and its correlations with sociodemographic, functional and clinical variables. Siblings' QoL was specifically assessed using as a parameter the QoL of typically developed Brazilian children.MethodsOne hundred and fifty families, 150 caregivers and 68 siblings completed the Family Quality of Life Scale, Burden Interview, KIDSCREEN‐27 Child and Adolescent Version and Parents Version questionnaires.ResultsMost families and caregivers reported a high family QoL and a low caregiver burden. Family QoL was significantly lower as caregivers' burden increased. Caregiver's burden was significantly lower with increasing family QoL levels. Self‐reported siblings' QoL was significantly worse than that of typically developed peers. There were no significant differences between self and parent‐reported siblings' QoL. Self‐reported siblings' QoL was significantly worse as their age increased and better with increasing family QoL levels. Parent‐reported siblings' QoL was significantly worse with increasing levels of caregiver's burden and significantly better as family QoL increased. There were no significant associations with functional and clinical variables.ConclusionsDespite the cross‐sectional nature of the available data precludes any statements of causality, our results reinforce the relevance of knowing the factors that influence the QoL of families and siblings of children and adolescents with meningomyelocele and the relevance of actions aimed at reducing caregivers' burden, improving family QoL and meeting siblings' individual needs. Future multicenter studies may validate the generalizability of our findings.

Siblings play an important role on child development and personality. However, several characteristics of the sibling relationship put sibling interactions at risk for frequent incidents of conflict. Several studies report that violence among siblings may be the most common form of family violence, with prevalence rates remaining relatively constant over the past 40 years, but society and people in the family environment still often overlook it, deeming these aggressive interactions 'normal'. Society recognizes child abuse, intimate partner violence, and elder abuse as significant social problems, but awareness of sibling abuse as a serious form of family violence remains low. The aim of the present chapter is to contribute to a better understanding of non-lethal physical abuse of siblings. The chapter will explore: differences between play fighting and sibling violence; differences between rivalry and sibling violence; associations of sibling violence with other forms of domestic violence (parent-to-child violence, dating violence, parent-to-parent violence, bullying at school); prevalence of different types of sibling violence (e.g., physical, verbal, and sexual); and perceptions of sibling violence from victims, perpetrators, and the wider society. The chapter will also explore risk factors for sibling violence (e.g., peer bullying, hostility, and anger), alongside short-term and long-term consequences (e.g., mental health difficulties, increased aggressive behavior outside the home, and interpersonal problems) of these behaviors. The role of other variables such gender, age, family communication, parenting quality, sibling attachment, and differential treatment by parents in sibling violence will also be considered. Cultural differences will be explored. The literature will be discussed in relation to several theoretical perspectives, such as family systems theory, social learning theory, and feminist theory, to help understand sibling violence. Suggestions regarding prevention and intervention are also discussed.
