A AB BS S T TR RA AC CT T O Ob bj je ec ct ti iv ve e: : Allergic rhinitis (AR) affects daily activities of patients by causing several symptoms including insomnia and chronic fatigue. That being said, the effect of AR on erectile dysfunction (ED) has not been examined adequately. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of AR on ED. M Ma at te er ri ia al l a an nd d M Me et th ho od ds s: : This study included a total of 196 male subjects, 100 of them being allergic rhinitis patients who admitted to Allergic and Clinical Immunology, Urology and Internal Diseases outpatient clinics of University of Health Sciences, Bursa Postgraduate Research and Training Hospital between October 2015 and December 2016, and 96 of them being healthy controls.18 to 55 year-old males with and without allergic rhinitis were included into the study. Males without any known disease comprised the healthy group. AR group included otherwise healthy patients who were regarded as having AR by skin prick test. This study used the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) to evaluate the quality of sexual life of males with AR, and the results were compared to the healthy male group matched for age and sex. R Re es su ul lt ts s: : The ages, ED scores and ED categories of the AR and control groups were compared. A difference was found in terms of ED scores and ED categories between two groups (p<0.001; p=0.002). No difference was detected in terms of age. ED score of the AR group was found to be significantly lower than the healthy group. In pairwise comparisons conducted for ED category, mild ED rate in the AR group was found to be higher than the healthy group, and the rate of subjects without ED in the healthy group was found to be higher. In terms of mild-tomoderate ED, no difference was found between the AR group and healthy group. The difference between allergic rhinitis and healthy subjects was significant in the 25-34 and 45-55 age groups in terms of ED categorization (p<0.005, p<0.001). C Co on nc cl lu us si io on n: : As other diseases and medical therapies were excluded from our study, we detected AR has adverse effects on ED and increases ED independently from medication use. We concluded that patients admitting for AR should also be evaluated for ED. Nonetheless, it is clear that larger studies examining the effects of allergic inflammation on ED and investigating the causal relationship between AR and ED are needed. Development and psychometric evaluation of a health-related quality of life instrument for individuals with adult-onset hearing loss

Objective Self-reports of “hearing handicap” are available, but a comprehensive measure of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) for individuals with adult-onset hearing loss (AOHL) does not exist. Our objective was to develop and evaluate a multidimensional HRQOL instrument for individuals with AOHL. Design The Impact of Hearing Loss Inventory Tool (IHEAR-IT) was developed using results of focus groups, a literature review, Advisory Expert Panel input, and cognitive interviews. Study Sample The 73-item field-test instrument was completed by 409 adults (22-91 years old) with varying degrees of AOHL and from different areas of the US. Results Multitrait scaling analysis supported four multi-item scales and five individual items. Internal consistency reliabilities ranged from 0.93 to 0.96 for the scales. Construct validity was supported by correlations between the IHEAR-IT scales and scores on the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey, Version 2.0 (SF-36v2) Mental Composite Summary (r’s = 0.32 – 0.64) and the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly/Adults (HHIE/HHIA) (r’s > −0.70). Conclusions The field test provide initial support for the reliability and construct validity of the IHEAR-IT for evaluating HRQOL of individuals with AOHL. Further research is needed to evaluate the responsiveness to change of the IHEAR-IT scales and identify items for a short-form.

ÖzetAmaç: Ağız kokusu nefesin hoş olmayan değişimidir. Bu çalışmanın amacı ağız kokusu problemi olan ve olmayan erkeklerin seksüel hayat kalitesini değerlendirmektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Ağız kokusu şikayeti olan, evli, çalışma-yı tamamlayacabilecek, 20-50 yaş arası erkek hastalar çalışmaya dahil edildi. Kontrol grubunu kulak burun boğaz muayenesi normal olan, sağlıklı, evli, erişkin erkekler oluşturdu. Ağız kokusu olan erkeklerin seksüel hayat kalitesi uluslararası erektil fonksiyon anketi kullanılarak değerlendirildi ve benzer özellikte sağlıklı erkeklerin sonuçları ile karşılaştırıldı. Bulgular: Seksen hasta çalışmayı tamamladı. Gruplar yaş, vücut kitle indeksi, evlilik süresi açısın-dan benzerdi(sırasıyla p=0.65, p= 0.20, p= 0.08). Ağız kokusu olan grup tüm fonksiyonel alanlarda daha düşük skorlara sahipti(p=0.0001).Ağız kokusunun derecesi ile uluslarası erekfil fonksiyon anketi skorları arasında korelasyon yoktu (p< 0.05). The aim of the study is to assess the quality of sexual life of males with and without halitosis. Material and Method: Males between 20-50 years old; with a complaint of halitosis; married and able to complete the study were included in the study. The control group were healthy, adult, married males who have normal otorhinolaryngologic examination. The International Index of Erectile Function questionnaire(IIEF) were used to assess the quality of sexual life of males with halitosis and the results were compared with a similar group of healthy men. Results: A total of 80 adult subjects completed the study. When the groups were compared in terms of age, body mass index(BMI) and duration of marriage, they were similar (p=0.65, p= 0.20, p= 0.08 respectively). The halitosis group had significantly lower scores for all function domains (p=0.0001).There was no correlation between degree of halitosis and the scores of IIEF (p< 0.05). Discussion: This is the first study investigating the sexual health of males with halitosis. Halitosis not only effects oral health status but also strongly declines quality of life. The otorhinolaryngologist must not only treat halitosis but also help the patient to stand up to social and sexual problems concomitting halitosis.
