Quality-of-service improvements from coupling a digital chest unit with integrated speech recognition, information, and Picture Archiving and Communications Systems

Abstract: Speech recognition reporting for chest examinations was introduced and tightly integrated with a Radiology Information System (RIS) and a Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS). A feature of this integration was the unique one-to-one coupling of the workstation displayed case and the reporting via speech recognition for that and only that particular examination and patient. The utility of the resulting, wholly integrated electronic environment was then compared with that of the previous analog ches… Show more

“…Full text for 3 articles could not be obtained from the British Library and were therefore excluded. Seventy-eight articles were excluded with reasons: did not report the outcome measures of interest ; did not report objective measure of patients' waiting times, is an opinion piece, an editorial or theoretical paper [69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83]; did not report any intervention [84][85][86][87][88][89] and was withdrawn from publication [90]. Sixty-three articles (57 studies) met the inclusion criteria.…”

“…11,12 To have realistic expectations of performance gains possible with speech recognition, it is useful to have a global understanding of the workflow in radiology and the possible points at which automation may be applied. The base case represents a film-based department with human transcription.…”

“…El tiempo que necesitan los radiólogos que realizan el dictado o los transcriptores para las correcciones está directamente relacionado con el porcentaje de reconocimiento del SRH (17,26,(29)(30)(31) . Este depende de factores intrínsecos del SRH (es decir, calidad de grabación, volumen del glosario, potencia del PC) y de factores condicionados por el proceso (forma de hablar del usuario, forma de sostener el micrófono, ruidos ambientales, etc.)…”
