Quality of life of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia: results of a longitudinal investigation over 1 yr

Abstract: Patients suffering from CLL could have their QoL improved by more effective symptom management and psycho-oncological support. This could focus on specific symptoms such as fatigue and might have particular benefits for female patients with respect to their emotional and social well-being.

“…Baseline scores for GHS/HRQoL were comparable with those reported from other studies of patients with CLL (GHS/HRQoL scores from previous studies have been reported as 64.5) [10,17]. The fact that HRQoL scores did not generally decline at progression may be due to the relatively short follow-up time for measuring HRQoL at progression, compared with the slow course of disease progression.…”

“…Scores for each domain are expressed on a 0-100 scale, with 0 being worst and 100 best for the functional and GHS/HRQoL domain, and 0 being best (fewer symptoms) and 100 being worst (more symptoms) for the individual symptom scores. This questionnaire has been used in several recent studies of patients with CLL [10,16,17]. The EORTC QLQ-CLL16 is intended as a supplementary module to the EORTC QLQ-C30.…”

“…Moreover, recent data suggest that the quality of life in CLL patients is reduced compared with the normal population and only moderately increased by some of the current treatment options. [67][68][69][70] Therefore, further studies assessing the health-related quality of life in CLL are strongly encouraged.…”

“…Nevertheless, evidence on QOL in this patient group is of importance as long-term survival rates increase and QOL has proven to be a useful clinical outcomemeasure and a major treatment goal in patients undergoing HCT. 4,5 Knowledge on QOL and its course over time may improve medical decision making and symptom management in this group of patients. This is especially true for long-term effects on QOL.…”
