Quality of life and rehabilitation in social and professional life after autologous stem cell transplantation

Abstract: Our retrospective data showed that ASCT has a significant, unfavourable impact on QOL, including reintegration into social and professional life. Most symptoms and scores returned to normal after 3 to 6 years. Employment status and QOL were similar in patients who participated in a rehabilitation programme and those who did not.

“…42 To date, only one intervention study specifically targeted for workrelated rehabilitation for auto-SCT patients has been published. 43 Strengths of this study were the large sample of individuals previously treated with allo-SCT, the long follow-up time, the rather high non-biased response rate, the detailed questions on occupational status, health and so forth, and the fact that the questions have been used in other studies. 25 Furthermore, data on occupational status were extracted from the time of diagnosis and from medical records so that recall bias could be eliminated.…”

“…37 So far, the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire has only been used in a few studies with HSCT patients, and in almost all of these cases the subjects were not inpatients. [38][39][40] As this questionnaire is internationally standardized and has shown a high reliability and validity in many studies with cancer patients it was also used for this study. 40 Statistics All 64 randomized patients represented the 'intent-to-treat' population.…”
