Quality of life and depression in haemodialysis patients

Abstract: Chronic kidney disease is associated with a high prevalence of depression, which increases inversely with the glomerular filtration rate. This paper aims to evaluate the factors associated with a low quality of life and depression in patients on haemodialysis. Two hundred patients undergoing haemodialysis answered the Medical Outcomes Study 36 - Item Short - Form Health Survey (SF-36) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Clinical and laboratory variables were analysed and correlated with these two tools. The p… Show more

“…Therefore, the translational value and relevance of surgically induced CKD might be disputable in medicine. Furthermore, it should be considered that several behavioral and mental disorders in CKD patients may arise from primary disease (55)(56)(57)(58) or from comorbidities (11), as well as from psychosocial aspects of chronic illness (8,19,59).…”

“…It has been shown that CKD leads to cardiovascular disease (4), stroke (5) and decreased locomotor activity (6). Individual's quality of life can be further decreased by sexual dysfunction (7), neurological and mental disorders including anxiety and depression (7)(8)(9)(10)(11), as well as cognitive impairment (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17) or epileptic seizures (18), all of which lead to increased socio-economic burden of affected people (19). Although, the exact pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the neurological complications of CKD remain unclear, there are several factors that might play a role, e.g., uremic encephalopathy (20), oxidative stress (21)(22)(23) and inflammation (21,22).…”

“…Teles, et al incluyeron a pacientes con edad media de 46.6 ± 15.4 años y en tratamiento de hemodiálisis, observando una prevalencia de depresión del 29% y menores puntuaciones en todos los dominios SF-36 en los pacientes con depresión. Además, identificaron factores asociados con el deterioro de la calidad de vida como el número de comorbilidades, la presencia de diabetes, anemia e hipoalbuminemia 21 .…”
