Quality of care and short and long‐term outcomes of oropharyngeal cancer care in the elderly

Abstract: Objective To examine associations between quality, short‐term and long‐term treatment‐related outcomes, and costs in elderly patients treated for oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer (OPSCC). Methods We retrospectively evaluated Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)‐Medicare data from 666 patients diagnosed with OPSCC from 2004 to 2007 using multivariate regression and survival analysis. Quality indicators were derived from guidelines for recommended care and performance measures. Results Higher qua… Show more

“…Multiple examples exist in the field of Head and Neck Cancer, where QIs were used to identify areas of substandard or highly variable care within a hospital, between hospitals, and between countries in key areas of patient care (42,43). Moreover, by aiming for greater guideline adherence and valid QI performance, improved functional outcomes and survival can be realized (44)(45)(46). The proposed QIs that have been developed in this study are meant to serve as a foundational quality measurement tool in SSNHL to achieve similar improvements in patient function and hearing recovery.…”

“…Quality assurance in head and neck surgery suggests structured registries including those of surgical complications and their risk factors [92]. In specific patient populations (e.g., elderly or infirm) adverse events have other predictors, other consequences, and sequelae [93]; it is uncertain how these should influence therapeutic decision making [94].…”
