Quality assessment of traditional Chinese medicine herb couple by high‐performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry combined with chemometrics

Abstract: This study was designed to develop a simple, specific and reliable method to overall analyze the chemical constituents in clematidis radix et rhizome/notopterygii rhizome et radix herb couple using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry and multiple chemometric analysis. First, the separation and qualitative analysis of herb couple was achieved on an Agilent Zorbax Eclipse Plus C18 column (250 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 μm), and 69 compounds were unambiguously or tentatively identifie… Show more

“…Nodakenin (chemical structure shown in Figure ) is a coumarin compound initially isolated from medicinal herbs such as Peucedanum decursivum , Angelica gigas , Notopterygium incisum and Saposhnikovia divaricata (Ahn, Lee, Kim, & Sung, ; Cheng et al, ; Xu et al, ; Zhou, Luo, & Kong, ). These herbal medicines have long been used as therapies for dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, rheumatism, headache and arthralgia in traditional medicine (Xu et al, ).…”

“…Several analytical methods have been established for determination of nodakenin in plants and herbal prescriptions, including high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with photodiode array detection (Seo, Kim, & Shin, ; Seo et al, ; Yoon et al, ), HPLC‐diode array detector coupled with mass spectrometry (Ahn et al, ; Kim, Yang, et al, ; Liu, Li, Song, & Wei, ; Xu et al, ), HPLC tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS/MS; Shen, Han, Huang, Zhu, & Lei, ; Cheng et al, ) and ultra‐performance liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC‐ESI‐MS/MS; Lee, Shon, & Yoon, ). Moreover, we also noticed that some HPLC methods have been described for the pharmacokinetic study of nodakenin in rat and dog plasma, such as UV detection (Liu & Li, ; Zhang, Li, & Yang, ; Zhang & Yang, ) and fluorescence detection (Li & Sun, ).…”

“…Variations could derive from the chemical constituents of the 14 component herbs. The yield of the ingredients can be influenced by various parameters like the plant origin, cultivation and collection conditions and processing procedures 7 . In the present study the antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, antineuro degenerative, and anti-aging potentials along with the antimicrobial activity of FFTSS have been examined to provide accurate, solid evidence of their biological activities.…”
