Quality assessment of pacemaker implantations in Denmark

Abstract: Our results demonstrate that sensitive data such as complications related to pacemaker implantations can be collected on a national basis. We suggest that a reoperation rate higher than 3% for atrial as well as ventricular pacing electrodes in the individual implanting centre should cause the centre to evaluate carefully the procedure as well as the performance of the individual implanter.

“…The locally reported incidence of overall complications was 11.9% with haematoma formation accounting for 2.6% of these [7]. This compares with overall complication rates of 4.5-10.1% in larger international registries, with haematoma formation accounting for 0.6-1.9% [3][4][5][6]. Our reported incidence of haematoma formation of 4.9% is consistent with these results.…”

“…Reported data related to prevalence rate of pacemaker implantation complications showed 11.9% (total incidence), 2.6 % of which was hematoma formation [18] . This pattern is comparable to major international register data (total incidence of complications is 4.5 -10.1%, 0.6-1.9% of which is hematoma rate [10], [11], [12], [13] ). According to our data, incidence of pacemaker pocket hematomas is 5.0-6.5% in patient subgroups receiving various antithrombotic therapy which is significantly consistent with reported information.…”

“…[9] Pacemaker pocket hematoma is one of the most common postsurgical complications whose incidence is 0.6-2.0% according to most of sources. [10], [11], [12], [13], [14] At the same time, according to the one of recent reports related to pacemaker implantation in New South Wales, [14] total incidence of complications is 11.9%. Lead dislodgement and postsurgical hematomas are the bulk of it.…”

“…A few months later the first fully implantable pacemaker was introduced. Nowadays far more than 500.000 patients per year are treated with cardiac pacemakers [5]. Most of FES clinical application are based on the principle that the electrical stimulus excite-depolarize nerve membranes or in general neural structures.…”
