Quality and cost of healthcare services in patients with diabetes in Iran: Results of a nationwide short-term longitudinal survey

Abstract: AimsTo investigate the journey of patients with diabetes in the healthcare system using nationally-representative patient-reported data.MethodsParticipants were recruited using a machine-learning-based sampling method based on healthcare structures and medical outcome data and were followed up for three months. We assessed the resource utilization, direct/indirect costs, and quality of healthcare services.ResultsOne hundred fifty-eight patients with diabetes participated. “…13 However, reports on the quality of care in diabetes are scarce from developing countries. 14 Afghanistan, with the highest rate of DALYs attributable to high-FPG in 2019, still has no action plan for diabetes response. Yemen ranked among the countries with the highest growth of DALY rate attributable to high-FPG in the last decade, which could be a result of political instability and war.…”

“…This study is a part of the IQCAMP study, a national study aimed to affordably evaluate the quality and costs of healthcare across the country for seven high-prevalence and high-cost diseases in Iran from 2016 to 2018, including diabetes mellitus ( 11 ), COPD, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, stroke, major depressive disorder, and end-stage renal failure. This study reports first-hand data on patient experience regarding healthcare utilization, costs, and quality of care for each disease among a limited but representative patient sample.…”

“…Addressing the limitations of previous sampling methods, we established a cohort study with a novel machine-learning based sampling method for evaluating the medical care. Iran Quality of Care Medicine Program (IQCAMP) is series of longitudinal surveys focusing on the patient-experience with healthcare services, which measure multiple patient-centered variables of healthcare utilization, quality, and costs at periodic time intervals ( 10 ) for seven high-prevalence and high-cost diseases, including diabetes mellitus ( 11 ), COPD, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, stroke, major depressive disorder, and end-stage renal failure.…”
