Quality Analysis of Gravure Spot Color Reproduction with an Ink Jet Printer

Abstract: Spot colors are widely used in commercial, product, or packaging printing to obtain a colorful appearance. With the combination of the right software, inks, and media, an ink jet printer can be treated as a digital proofer for spot color printing, providing significant time and cost savings compared to conventional procedures for jobs approval for printing technologies with master image carrier, such as rotogravure, flexography, or offset lithography. An Epson StylusPro 4000 digital printer combined with comme… Show more

“…From the above result, it can be seen that the regression precision obviously improves as the number of polynomial terms increases, but when the number of terms reaches a certain value the mean error becomes small enough. For example, for the first-degree polynomial 4 , the average error is 10.9106Δ which exceeds the reproduction error threshold [17,18], and the maximal error is 37.5866Δ which is a visually unacceptable error. Additionally its standard deviation and variance are 5.4642Δ and 29.8576Δ , respectively, which indicate that the distribution of errors is unsatisfactory.…”

“…All these components affect accuracy of proof-press color matching in digital proofing systems. 4,7,8 There are ongoing efforts to develop new proofing systems that will meet the requirements, such as simulation of color of paper, effect of gloss, spot color reproduction, and remote proofing. 9 Print media properties are important from the point of view of ink and paper interaction and achieving desirable color matching quality, and reproducibility.…”
