“…This study focuses on a research field rarely covered by the scientific literature and identifies the main topics of interest to think tanks in the period after a systemic crisis. A qualitative methodology based on Boolean logic is used that is suitable for small samples (Ragin, 1987, 2009) and promotes the theory according to the causal relationships detected by the proposed model and a deep prior knowledge of the cases (Rihoux, 2017). The proposed model has been tested with the fsQCA and reveals five causal configurations that explain the specialization strategies of think tanks on the international public agenda.…”

“…The comparative analysis of the specialization strategies followed by think tanks provides a clear vision of the factors that increase the thematic concentration of their discourse, based on different logical configurations. The research design process has avoided developing a mechanical approach, establishes various iterations within a perspective oriented to the cases under study (Rihoux, 2013; Rihoux & Lobe, 2009) and guarantees methodological control (Rihoux, 2017).…”

Its stateof-the-art use requires some specific conceptual and technical competences in which only few researchers have been trained thus far.…”

“…A condition or combination of conditions may be consistently associated with an outcome, yet this does not mean that there is a causal relationship with the outcome. Researchers can, however, explore the solutions in conjunction with “theory, conceptual frameworks, and detailed knowledge about the cases to develop causal models that help unpack potential mechanisms leading to the outcome.” 13 This entails returning to the cases 12,41 to explain the resulting solutions leading to the presence of the outcome and those leading to the absence of the outcome.…”
