The Mearim River Watershed has multiple uses e.g. leisure, navigation, fishing and subsistence agriculture and constitutes the main source of supply for the populations of municipalities situated along its course. In addition to being a water supply source, the existence of the ‘pororoca’ (tidal bore) effect in a stretch of the lower course of the Mearim River attracts people from several Brazilian states and different countries, as it offers excellent conditions for surfing in fresh water. In this respect, given the importance of the watershed, this study was developed to report the detection of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli pathotypes in a stretch of the lower course of the Mearim River, located in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. Thirty water samples were collected from 10 sampling points. To quantify E. coli, the chromogenic enzymatic system was used and positive samples were isolated and biochemically identified. Pure cultures underwent DNA extraction by heating followed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) characterization. At the time of the collections, an observation schedule was used to record information on the existence of rearing of livestock and domestic animals; businesses; residences; and fruit and vegetable farming on the riverbanks. The samples were analyzed for the mean populations of E. coli, which ranged from 444 to 2,585 MPN mL-1. Twenty bacterial isolates were identified and the diarrheal pathotypes ETEC, typical EPEC and atypical EPEC were detected. The detection of these pathotypes can represent an epidemiological risk and compromise several uses of this water resource, such as irrigation of fruits and vegetables consumed raw, fishing, animal watering and recreation. Structural investments in basic sanitation are essential to minimize environmental degradation resulting from anthropic activities and to act preventively in public health. In addition, the recovery of riparian forests along the watershed and the maintenance of vegetation in these areas are measures to reduce the transport of particles from the soil to the watercourses, improving the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of this water resource.

Os bosques de mangue constituem o patrimônio natural, atrativos ao turismo e ofertam serviços ecossistêmicos para conservação ambiental e usos da natureza nas áreas costeiras do Litoral Sul da Bahia. Esta pesquisa investigou aspectos ecológicos e biogeoquímicos a partir da diagnose foliar, biometria e os teores de metais-traço (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb) nas folhas de plantas de mangue na APA Tinharé-Boipeba, Cairu, Bahia, Brasil. Foram coletadas folhas da Rhizophora mangle L. e Laguncularia racemosa L. Gaertn em dez pontos amostrais e efetuadas análises biométricas, da integridade foliar e dos metais-traço (F-AAS). Foram adotados os teores de metais-traço dos sedimentos da Baía de Camamu obtidos por Oliveira et al. (2000). Os níveis dos metais mensurados nas folhas foram considerados não tóxicos (Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd) e inferiores aos bosques de mangue em áreas costeiras impactadas. Os valores do FC (< 1,0) indicaram que os metais-traço não estariam disponíveis para a translocação e que o acúmulo destes nas folhas não correspondeu aos teores no substrato. A análise multivariada desvelou que as variações na área e na integridade foliar devem representar uma resposta a estressor distinto dos investigados e discriminou os metais-traço conforme a mobilidade geoquímica. Infere-se o potencial do manguezal da APA Tinharé-Boipeba como área de referência ambiental, barreira biogeoquímica e aos usos da natureza e conservação.

This research aimed to investigate the quality of coastal surface waters and the levels of trace metals in the leaves of Rhizophora mangle L. in the Tinharé-Boipeba APA, Baixo Sul da Bahia, Brazil. The physicalchemical variables were measured in situ with the aid of a multiparameter probe and samples of Rhizophora leaves were collected at 10 sampling points for biometric, visual diagnosis and trace metal analysis (F-AAS). The results of the OD analyzes revealed changes in water quality (70% of the sampling points), associated with forms of land occupation and failures in environmental sanitation. Cluster analysis allowed the classification of samples into biogeochemical groups, according to trace element content and leaf biometry. This multivariate analysis suggested that the variation in leaf area can be explained, in part, by the levels of Cu and Zn, in addition to other ecological-environmental factors different from those investigated. The levels of trace metals in the leaves were considered normal and non-toxic and the levels of trace metals in the sediments of this APA did not characterize a polluted area, however water pollution demands coastal management, improvements in sanitation and environmental monitoring, and biomonitoring.
