Quadrature demultiplexing using a degenerate vector parametric amplifier

Abstract: Abstract:We report on quadrature demultiplexing of a quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signal into two cross-polarized binary phaseshift keying (BPSK) signals with negligible penalty at bit-error rate (BER) equal to 10 −9 . The all-optical quadrature demultiplexing is achieved using a degenerate vector parametric amplifier operating in phase-insensitive mode. We also propose and demonstrate the use of a novel and simple phase-locked loop (PLL) scheme based on detecting the envelope of one of the signals aft… Show more

“…(8) suggests that the cos and sin components, i.e., two quadrature components, are outputted as the x and y polarization states, respectively, meaning that the two quadrature components are demultiplexed into two cross-polarized lights. This function of quadrature-demultiplexing is achieved in a vector PSA system [11]. The present system offers the same function in a different way.…”

“…We need to point out that the stable phase relationship of the phase-locked waves needs to be maintained when they are processed and launched to the coupler separately. In practice, an active phase-locking loop (PLL) is usually employed to stabilize the phase relationship [9], [13]. When the format conversion is finished, ASE noise is added to change the OSNR at node B to evaluate the bit-error-rates (BER) performance of the converted signals.…”

“…As demonstrated in [3][4][5], PA-PSA involves coherently mixing the signal and idler of a dual pump degenerate vector PSA in a polarizer, as shown in Fig. 1.…”

“…For 16-QAM it constitutes a building block towards conversion to four binary signals which would allow real-time direct-detection, or possibly alloptical regeneration through amplitude regeneration and coherent addition of the decomposed parts. Polarizationassisted phase sensitive amplification (PA-PSA) has been established as an effective technique for field quadrature decomposition, with demonstrated applications in regeneration of BPSK and QPSK signals and quadrature decomposition of QPSK signals [3][4][5].…”
