Design of All-Optical Modulation Format Converter From One 8PSK to Two QPSK Signals Based on Phase Sensitive Amplification in Elastic Optical Network

Abstract: Flexible conversion between modulation formats enables intelligent grooming techniques for an elastic optical network (EON) aimed at dynamical spectral efficiency allocation in optical fiber transmission. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate an all-optical modulation format conversion scheme between an 8-ary phase shift keying (8PSK) signal and two quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signals based on phase-sensitive amplification in highly nonlinear fiber. Benefiting from two simultaneous but different p… Show more

“…In principle, for the case with different gain at each operating point, a similar analysis process may also be used in spite of complexity. In addition, it should be seen that our method can not only be useful for measuring the output OSNR of the all-optical regenerator but also applied to estimate the OSNR degradation induced by other nonlinear devices in optical communication links, such as all-optical modulation format conversion [21,22], all-optical wavelength conversion [23], etc. To summarize, the in-band measurement method proposed here has advantages in cost and adaptability over the traditional OSNR measurement in the optical domain.…”

“…De-aggregation techniques can realize the function of decomposing the high-order signal into multiple low-order signals. For example, eight-phaseshift-keying (8PSK) is decomposed into three s binary-phase-shift-keying (BPSK) signals using nonlinear effects in HNLF [7] , and 8PSK can also be decomposed into two QPSK signals using phase-sensitive amplification (PSA) [8] . One-to-one conversion includes both the conversion from lower-order to higher-order modulation and the functionality for converting from higher-order to lower-order modulation.…”

“…In [14], the authors present a model that reduces the number of utilized spectrum slots compared with the conventional schemes. In [15], the authors have developed a flexible converter between modulation formats, which enables intelligent grooming techniques for an EON aimed at dynamical spectral efficiency allocation in optical fiber transmission.…”
