Quadrant root planing versus same‐day full‐mouth root planing

Abstract: Both therapies were associated with a reduction in antibody titres and an increase in the binding ability or avidity of antibodies, but there was a marked inter-subject variability and statistical significance was reached for only some of the test bacteria. No significant differences in the humoral antibody dynamics were found between the two treatment approaches.

“…The gain in clinical attachment and the reduction in PD in the SRP group were without significance, but they were slightly higher than in the FMS group when considering moderate PDs at baseline. Our findings confirmed results reporting no statistically significant differences in clinical and microbiologic variables between SRP and FMS in patients with chronic periodontitis over 6 months 24‐26,37 . In a recent study, 5 a CAL gain in moderately deep pockets (initially 5 to 7 mm) of 1.0 mm in quadrant‐wise SRP and of 1.1 mm in FMS was reported after 6 months.…”

“…The longer 26 and more tiring appointment necessary for same‐day FMS may explain the slight superiority of traditional SRP. In addition, the results may be explained by different individual humoral immune responses or possible failure of the host response to produce adequate levels of biologically functional antibodies to periodontal pathogens 37 . The benefits for the patients treated by ultrasonic FMS are fewer appointments and less chair time 39 .…”

“…Specific antibody titres were measured by ELISA as described previously (Ebersole et al 1980), using formalized whole cells. A. actinomycetemcomitans , P. gingivalis , P. intermedia , T. forsythensis and T. denticola were prepared for coating the ELISA plates as described previously (Apatzidou & Kinane 2004b).…”

“…They concluded that both therapies were asso ciated with a reduction in antibody titres and an increase in the binding ability of antibodies. 49 In relation to the possible role of disinfectants on the outcomes, costs or side-effects, there is insuffi cient and inconclusive research. The FMD approach may be useful in patients with poor oral hygiene during the early heal ing phase and could allow the patient to become accustomed to new oral hygiene measures.…”
