Q‐switched double‐frequency Nd:YAG (532 nm) laser is an effective treatment for racial lip pigmentation

Abstract: Summary Introduction Lip darkening is a relatively common condition, especially in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It is well documented in the literature and generally considered to be multifactorial. The presentation can be physiologic or pathologic and caused by a variety of local or systemic factors. “…Many articles have been published regarding lip melanin depigmentation with a laser using near-infrared (1064, 940, and 810 nm) and also the Q-switched 532 nm. Most of the previous studies mentioned adverse effects such as reactivation of herpes labialis, dark crust, scars, swelling, dark pigmentation, burning sensation, patient discomfort, and pain [11,12,[15][16][17].…”

“…Additionally, only few studies examined the safety and efficacy of laser treatment in skin of color [13,14]. e efficacy and safety data of nonablative fractional laser in Saudi patients is limited [15,16] with no data that focus on new technologies such as 1550 nm/1927 nm dual wavelength laser.…”

“…L ip hyperpigmentation can be physiologic or pathologic, and it may be caused by a variety of local or systemic factors including genetics, smoking, or even prolonged administration of drugs (antimalarials or tricyclic antidepressants). 1 Physiologic lip hyperpigmentation is a common cosmetic problem in Asians, as well as in African-Americans and Hispanics. 2,3 It usually occurs during the first 2 decades of life and presents as a patchy pigmentation with a symmetrical pattern on the lip.…”
